Smoky Mountain Invitation

For those of you who live in our area, I would like to invite you to my daughter, Briana's, senior piano recital.  Briana has been taking lessons for 13 years, since the age of five.  She will be playing 7 pieces, ranging from classical to praise to fun.  One other girl will play 2 pieces in between to give Briana a rest.  Also, two of Briana's pieces will be piano/violin duets with another homeschool student.  One is a beautiful worship piece; the other- tons of fun!
She will be busy this week practicing, but also, she and the violinist will be playing 3 duets in a wedding on Friday night, with the rehearsal on Thursday.
My parents are coming over on Wednesday, and will be here at least until Monday, I think.  They are taking Marissa and Daniella to Dollywood on Thurs. if the weather is good.  My mom will be helping me on Saturday with getting things ready for the reception after the recital.  Since this is a recital just for Briana, and quite a few extra people are coming, we are helping the teacher out with food and costs.
So, we are eagerly anticipating this weekend.  Please join us if you can.

Muffins Anyone?

Yesterday Marissa and I made some of our favorite muffins.  She loves to cook, so I include her whenever I can.  These were  Banana Oatmeal Muffins.  They aren't quite as healthy because of the brown sugar.  You can substitute molasses for the brown sugar, but we didn't like them too much that way.  Here's the recipe.
Mix in large bowl:
1 Cup flour (we grind 2/3 cup of white wheat)
1 1/4 c oats
1/4 tsp cinnamon
3 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
Mix in a seperate bowl:
1/3 c oil
1/4 c raw honey (or 1/2 c sugar)
1/2 c brown sugar (can get by with less)
2 eggs, beaten
2 bananas, mashed
Mix bowl #1 with bowl #2 until all ingredients are moist.  Bake 20 min. at 400 degrees in greased or prepared tins.
I'm guessing most of you know this tip, but I'll include it anyway.  When your bananas start getting too ripe, peel them, stick them in a freezer bag, and freeze.  They pop out easily when you're ready to make muffins or bread.  They only have to sit out for a few minutes to be soft enough to mash, too.
I'd love for you to share your favorite muffin recipe.  Let me know if you do.

Spring = freshness, lovely warm days, craziness

Although, we've had a touch of winter return (there is snow on the mountains and the frost killed my irises--boo hoo), today is a beautiful spring day, and the allergies....I mean flowers and trees are blooming everywhere.  Marissa is quite stuffed up right now with what I assume is allergies.  She ran a fever last night, but it's gone today.  The yearly craziness of spring is also in bloom.
In one week's time,Briana took (and passed) her driver's test, took an English Comp CLEP test (still waiting on the results), and was in a ballet competition (her group won a platinum).  (Anyone care to guess where-or should I say who-this year's spring craziness is coming from?  : )  Love ya, Bri!)  In addition to her weekly piano and ballet lessons, she's also going to practice once a week right now with the violinist she'll be playing duets with at her senior piano recital.  We also just found out today that she will be playing three duets with him at a wedding May 4th.  Tomorrow night she has an interview to be a camp counselor this summer.
She thinks she did well on the CLEP test.  We already know she passed the multiple choice.  The test was more involved than what we had read about it.  The college she plans to attend requires you take the essay version of the test.  We were told to expect 50 multiple choice in 45 min., and an impromtu argumentative essay -45 min., handwritten.   Instead, there were 88 multiple choice in 90 min. and TWO argumentative essays in 90 min.  They were not particularly easy subjects, either; one especially.  She said on the 2nd one there were a couple of times she was at a total loss as to what to write, and she prayed, "Lord, I need you to give me words."  And, He did!  Of course, we don't know how the English dept grades, but she is a good writer, and she thinks she did pretty well on them.  It will be great if she passes.  She'll get the college credit for Comp 1, without having to take the class.  She's studying now for the U.S. History 1 CLEP test, which is supposed to be one of the hardest.
Yesterday, Marissa, Daniella, and I went with a few other homeschoolers to a Mother-Daughter Tea at a local Inn.   It is pretty place, and the food was very good, but quite pricey for the little amount of food you get.  It was a pleasant splurge, however, and we had a nice time.
On Sunday, we celebrated Daniella's 5th Gotcha Day.  We had their usual request of homemade ice cream sandwiches--Toll House cookies with vanilla ice cream between two.  If you have never read Daniella's adoption story, you can read it here (part 1-the agonizing) and here (part 2-the happy ending).
Ashley is contemplating some changes in her life.  She originally elected not to go to college, but now is considering an online AA degree from Liberty University, supplemented with correspondence courses in Christian counseling.  She is praying about it.  She also found a program that she is very interested in and praying about for next year.  It is at a ranch about 45 min. from here that is for children and teens who have a tough home life.  The position is for a mentor--kind of an assistant to the house parents.  You live in the home with the girls, tutoring, doing Bible study, helping with cooking, and being a mentor.  You can do 3 months in the summer or 9 months for the school year.  She could come home on the weekends, and would have a few other days off during the time period.  It would be a really big change for her (she just finished saying the day before that she had no desire to go off to college to live.)  This type of ministry is something that she has had on her heart for several years, so we will definitely be in prayer about it.
My girls are growing quickly ladies.  In another month, 2 of my 4 will be graduated and moving toward their life callings.  This season may be a little crazy some weeks, but they will quickly become cherrished memories.  I hope you all make some special memories with your children this week.
I'm off to start some supper and do a little scrapbooking.  My parents will be popping in for a few minutes tonight.  We are dog sitting for them while they are in town for the day at Dollywood.

The Easter Musical

I am still here.  I don't know why I haven't been on lately.  I would think about blogging, but just didn't have the motivation to get on here.  I guess it's mostly because I really didn't have anything to say.  That's amazing for me!!!  Also, this past week, I've actually had a couple of good books, and that's how I spent my free time.  Well....not that I still have much profound to say, but I at least have something to blog about.
Our church had their Easter musical this past weekend--Sat., Sun., and Mon. nights.  My confession....I'm not a big choir musical person.   However, this one I really enjoyed.  I think that is due to the added elements this time.  It was not just song after song---maybe I'm a visual person and didn't know it.  The choir director also used narration, wordless drama, bits of a silent film of Jesus, and "worship enhancement".   : )  That is his word for the praise dance team.  Even though he, the pastor, the choir.....everyone that I heard, loved it and spoke of what a wonderful added worship it was, he refuses to use the word dance!  Monday night as he prayed for the performance, he prayed for the Lord to bless "the (slight pause and continues searching for each word) girls...as they....do their.....thing".  : )
Sunday night was the best, and the whole packed auditorium was in such a worshipful spirit.  You could just feel it.  The choir sang with an extra charged voice.  It was great.
My little girls sat through all 3 nights just as still and attentive as they could be.  Last night Marissa called me back up to her room.  She sat crying, telling me what an effect the musical had on her heart.  She talked about being so sad, but so happy, at the sacrifice that Jesus made for her.  She said those were all things she knew before(and she's already asked Jesus into her life), but the musical just made her understand it more.  I think with her being a very visual person, the film and drama helped make it more real to her.
Our oldest, Ashley, sang in the choir and (clears throat) "danced" in the last song.  She helped choreograph all of them.   Briana was in all of the dances, and James was one of the disciples.

Briana is on the back row, third person from the right in this picture.

Briana

Ashley is on the front row, the 2nd from the right.  I never could get a good picture of Briana in this one.

Ashley-on the right- with her friends before the musical.
I also need to mention that Marissa and Daniella were in a Easter Children's musical the week before.

Playing handbells.  Daniella is the itty bitty one in the yellow shirt, second from the left.  Marissa is in the pastel purple shirt.  They really did an amazing job.  Even little Daniella hit her note right on time without a cue from the teacher.  She was reading the notes on the flip chart!
We've had such a blessed time during these musicals, and the Lord is showing us so many things during this season of our life.  They are not always easy lessons.  In fact, some of them are quite difficult.  But He is faithfully teaching us and growing us.
I will leave with one more picture that I just had to share.  Can you believe that in March all the trees were budded out.  That's not supposed to happen until at least  the end of April around here.  This picture was taken a couple of weeks ago in front of our peach tree.
